Late one evening, HydroDry Restoration received an urgent call from a local correctional facility in Manchester. Due to mischief or misuse, inmates had caused severe clogs in the jail’s sewage line, triggering a full backup that inundated the entire cell block with raw sewage and contaminated water. The backup affected walls, floors, fixtures, and exposed surfaces throughout the block, posing threats to structural integrity, health risks, and operational disruption.
We mobilized immediately, dispatching four IICRC‑certified technicians who arrived within an hour of the emergency call. Our priority was to isolate and contain the affected area to prevent further contamination from spreading into adjacent housing units and support corridors. We deployed containment barriers, negative air pressure systems, and safety zones to protect inmates, staff, and unaffected sections of the facility.
Once containment was secured, we began the painstaking work of extracting raw sewage and excess water using high‑capacity pumps and industrial vacuums. Every surface was rinsed with EPA‑approved disinfectants to neutralize biological hazards. We then turned to structural drying, positioning commercial dehumidifiers and air movers to drive moisture out of walls, floors, and hidden cavities.
After moisture control, we performed a rigorous sanitization protocol, applying hospital-grade disinfectants to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Odor control measures—such as antimicrobial fogging and air scrubbers—were used to neutralize malodors that often linger after sewage events.
Throughout the night, our team monitored humidity levels, moisture sensors, and API readings to verify that drying goals were met. We performed multiple passes of inspection to ensure all surfaces were safe, dry, and odor-free. We also documented the entire process—before, during, and after—for compliance and insurance review.
By morning, the entire cell block had been restored to operational condition. Structural components were safe, surfaces clean and disinfected, and air quality restored to acceptable levels. The facility staff were able to return inmates to the block, minimizing disruption and liability. No further spread of contamination was detected, and the restoration met rigorous safety standards.
